Planting for the Community Orchard

Saturday 17th May 2008

The Parkmore Residents Association would like to invite you to take part in the second planting day for our Community Orchard. We started off with the planting of 20 trees back in December, and now we’re ready for the next big phase of the project.

It will take place on Saturday 10th May, starting at 10am and running through until the afternoon. The lads from Seedsavers are planning to put in about 30 apple trees, and some bushes of soft fruit like blackcurrants and gooseberries. There will also be a gravel path going in, so that we’ll be able to walk through it more easily.

So we’re calling for as many helpers as we can get! The lads will need our help, whether it’s digging holes for the trees, carrying gravel about in the wheelbarrow, or just giving moral support. If you’re not able to help, then please do call by and see how we’re getting on!

This will be our orchard to keep and look after, and hopefully in a year or two we’ll be able to harvest the apples and other fruit. These are special apple trees, a couple of different traditional breeds that you can’t buy in the shops! So please do come along, meet the lads from Seed Savers, learn a bit about the orchard, and enjoy the day out. We’re hoping that it will be a big event for all the community.

The Orchard has been funded by RAPID and Galway County Council. We’re also very grateful to Irish Seed Savers for planning the orchard and carrying out all the work.
